Merry Matters Making Many Mats!
Are you getting bored with the lack of socializing? Are you concerned with the number of plastic bags that over fill our landfills? Are you looking for ways to help the homeless people in our area? Join the Merry Matters! We are looking for anyone and everyone who is interested in getting together once or twice a month for a little socializing and fellowship, as we make mats for the homeless. These crocheted mats are placed under bedding to keep people who sleep outside off the damp or cold ground.
Our first get-together will be this Wednesday, February 3rd, at 11:00 am in the FLC. This will consist of an introduction to our goals and the process, and developing a schedule for our activities. We will be crocheting mats for the homeless using plastic grocery bags. Shirley Schmidt has been making mats on her own for some time. It takes 1500 bags to make one mat. Let’s help her out. You do not need to know how to crochet. There is a job for everyone. The plastic bags need to be collected, sorted, folded, cut into strips, tied together, wound into balls of “plarn” (plastic yarn) and then crocheted. A bag collection barrel is set up in the narthex so you can bring your used bags to church or drop them off at the church office. Please, no dirty or torn bags.
